The postseason reaches a pivotal moment this week with several pitching matchups that will determine who will advance. Ace veterans and young starters face off, so here are the 5 pitching matchups to not miss this week:
Logan Gilbert (Mariners) vs. Jack Flaherty (Tigers) — Tuesday
Following their series in Detroit, Seattle is counting on Logan Gilbert to cool off a hot Tigers offense. Gilbert’s command, high spin and ability to handle pressure will be tested.
Flaherty on the other side, brings his resurgent stuff and power arsenal to Detroit, and will counterbalance. Bullpens will be stretched and swings off two top arms will decide the tone of this game.
Shane Bieber (Blue Jays) vs. Carlos Rodón (Yankees) — Tuesday
Toronto could finish this here. The Blue Jays turn to Shane Bieber, the veteran who has been tremendous down the stretch.
For the Yankees, Carlos Rodón, their in-series ace who has talent and expectations, takes the mound. In this win-or-go-home game every inning, every pitch, every matchup matters.
Quinn Priester (Brewers) vs. Jameson Taillon (Cubs) — Wednesday, Oct. 8
The Brewers will turn to breakout starter Quinn Priester, who has been their best starter this season. The Cubs go with Jameson Taillon, a veteran with postseason experience who is steady on the mound.
Priester’s pressure test and Taillon’s composure make for a fun youth vs experience matchup.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto (Dodgers) vs. Aaron Nola (Phillies) — Wednesday
Yamamoto has shouldered a heavy load for L.A. this year and comes in with momentum and swing-missing stuff. On the other hand, Aaron Nola is used to October. His polish and pace have carried him deep into past postseasons.
This matchup has all the narrative tension: a strong arm trying to completely take over on the road, against a veteran looking for redemption in a tough park.
Shohei Ohtani (Dodgers) vs. Phillies — Saturday (if Game 5 is needed)
If this series gets to game 5, the Dodgers should have Shohei Ohtani slated to start. One of the most fascinating potential starts of the postseason. As a two-way phenom, Ohtani affects decisions in the bullpen and rotation, and makes for interesting in-game strategy.
If he pitches, everyone will be watching every pitch.
