With U.S. Congress unable to come to terms on a budget agreement, Lejeune (N.C.), which resides on Camp Lejeune and is the only Department of Defense high school in the state, saw its sports programs currently paused because of the government shutdown.
Per a report on Tuesday, the Devilpups’ athletics program got the green light to return to action despite having to go on pause just a few days ago.
According to a HighSchoolOT report, the U.S. Department of Defense Education Agency made the announcement it was making high school athletics and after school programs, considered exempted activities during the government shutdown.
Among the Lejeune sports programs that were affected at the school was the undefeated boys soccer team, football, cross country, girls tennis and volleyball. Lejeune’s football team is currently 0-6 on the season, with its latest game being a 48-0 loss to Northside on Sep. 30. The Devilpups had previously moved the game up in anticipation of the government shutdown.
Through six games for the football team this season, Lejeune has been shut out five out of the six times they have taken the field. The Devilpups’ closest contest came back on Sep. 5 in a 28-14 loss to South Lenoir, the lone game they registered points this season.
Camp Lejeune’s football team is scheduled to be back in action this Friday night to take on East Carteret.
