Bulldog kicker makes history in 125th Bell Game

(PUEBLO, Colo) — Kicking field goals for Pueblo Centennial High School was not always in the plan for Bulldog senior kicker Ella Greenwood.

“Since I already knew most of the football team, they asked me to come for a few summer practices, so I did, and I came to tryouts,” Greenwood said.

Greenwood was the backup during her junior year, but she earned the starting spot this fall as a senior.

“She wanted to kick for us; I thought it was what a great opportunity for her and for our team, and honestly, she was probably the best kicker we had anyway,” said Bulldog Head Coach Tracy Swearingen.

She has also made history this fall. Greenwood became the first female kicker to play and score in this year’s Bell Game. But while she was kicking in front of a sold-out crowd, history was not on her mind.

“It was really just another game,” Greenwood said. “I kicked a few more times earlier this season against Sierra, and I don’t remember what the other game was, but so it was just it just felt normal to me.”

Greenwood’s true passion is on the soccer field.

“I’ve played soccer since I was two,” Greenwood said. “I played for Rangers team here in Pueblo, and I’ve played every single year in high school.”

In her junior year, she scored 16 goals to go with and honorable mention for the All-State team. While she uses the gridiron to warm up for the soccer field, she wants to remind everyone that anyone can kick a football

“I’ve had a lot of fun doing it, and I definitely think that more girls should kick,” Greenwood said.
