⚽BOYS SOCCER - Division I
Hendricken 1, Moses Brown 1
PROVIDENCE – How thin is the gap between the state’s best boys soccer teams?
Based off what happened in Tuesday’s matchup between Hendricken and Moses Brown, very.
The Hawks brought their 10-1 record to the East Side to take on the 8-0-2 Quakers and neither team added a win or took a loss. Hendricken struck in the first half, Moses Brown struck in the second and playoff-quality soccer was played everywhere in between.
While the weather felt like more like the beginning of the season than the middle, the play very much looked like something you’ll see in November.
Hendricken and Moses Brown played with purpose. There was no rushing into possessions and every 50/50 in the midfield was a tough battle for possession. Both squads had their looks, but neither could convert their chances.
With the clock winding down on the first half, the Hawks finally did. Coming off a direct kick and Lucas Sauco made the most of it, sneaking a shot inside the bottom left corner for a 1-0 lead the team took into halftime.
Suddenly trailing instead of being nil-nil, the Quakers played with purpose early in the second half. They won possessions and found opportunity and 10 minutes in, Jack Kirkman made it pay off. Moses Brown played a ball into the box and in the mess of bodies, it found it’s way toward Kirkman, who put a head on it and snuck it into the goal to tie the score.
The remainder of the half was a grind from both sides. Hendricken made some solid runs but MB goalie Drew Algava and the defense was there to prevent anything from coming from them. The Quakers offense also had a handful of opportunities, only to see chances fly just wide, just high or saved by Hendricken’s Matt Gorvett.
Hendricken is now 10-1-1 in Division I this fall and sits atop the RPI standings. The Hawks will be back in action Thursday when they host Central Catholic (Mass.).
Moses Brown moves to 8-0-3 and is in third place in the Division I RPI standings. The Quakers will return to the field Thursday when they host central Falls.

⚽BOYS SOCCER - Division II
North Providence 1, East Greenwich 0
NORTH PROVIDENCE – The points were set to be shared in this Division II boys soccer showdown until Jeronimo Grajales popped up in the final minute.
His goal on virtually the last kick of the game lifted North Providence on its home turf at Serio Field. What could have been a Tuesday night of frustration for the Cougars ended in a 1-0 triumph over East Greenwich.
“I knew the last one had to be mine,” Grajales said.
The Avengers looked to play a free kick long out of their own half, but the ball hung up a bit short and allowed North Providence an extra opportunity to come forward. Luca Cardarelli touched it behind the defense and Grajales cut sharply off the left wing into the penalty area. His light left-footed touch was enough to push the ball past onrushing East Greenwich keeper Brady Parks and roll it into the open cage.
“I just saw the space open and the goalie come out to me,” Grajales said. “I just tried to place it. Shoot it smart.”
Both teams missed golden chances in the first half and the Avengers (8-2-2) made things a bit more even after the break. The Cougars (8-3-0) carried play early, attacking the visitors with star midfielder Wyatt Gelzhiser in a walking boot and forward Andrey Goretoy limping off early with a right ankle injury.
“We had the chances and we kept missing,” Grajales said.
East Greenwich retains the top spot in the league standings, but this result will tighten the gap between the Avengers and pursuers like Coventry, Scituate and North Providence. The Cougars have some work to do before meeting the Spartans in what should be another highlight match next week.
“It’s going to make the team better,” Grajales said. “We’re going to be better for the next game and have confidence.”

The hosts led 2-0 at halftime on goals from Ella Moulton and Hailey Jones. Ariana DiBernardo put the game out of reach with the third score in stoppage time of the second half.
