Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has been playing some of the best football of his career through five weeks, and fresh off a four-touchdown game against the New York Jets, No. 4 is being mentioned as an MVP candidate.

Tap the brakes on that (for now), as there is still a lot of football left, but there's no denying that Prescott is in some sort of form, and he's completing 71.3 percent of his passes (career high), has 10 passing touchdowns to go with his 1,356 passing yards.

So, what has been the catalyst for Prescott's impressive start to the season? One reason might be, as head coach Brian Schottenheimer alludes to, that Dak is getting the ball to the open receiver, regardless of who it is.

“I'm going to say this about Dak," Schottenheimer said. "What Dak's doing an incredible job of right now is he's just reading progressions, and the first open guy is going to get the ball, and I think that's what we're seeing."

Dak Prescott spreading ball around Cowboys' offense

The Cowboys' offense has seven players with at least 10 receptions through the first five weeks, with George Pickens, CeeDee Lamb, and Jake Ferguson the main targets.

But as we saw against the Jets, Ryan Flournoy got his time in the sun with six catches for 114 yards, or it might be Javonte Williams, Hunter Luekpe, or Luke Schoonmaker who get targets as well.

It is becoming clear that it doesn't matter who is the first read on the progression; if the receiver is open, the football is coming his way.

Prescott has gotten off to a blistering start to 2025, and it might be his understanding and reading of his progressions that have been the catalyst for it.
