AMES, Iowa — From an Ames Little Cyclone, to an Iowa State Cyclone, playing in Ames has always been Tamin Lipsey’s dream.
“It’s been a dream come true,” said Lipsey, a senior point guard for the Cyclones. “From Little Cyclone to Big Cyclone. It was one of my dreams growing up to play here in Hilton. I was just a fan all the way growing up, and I don’t take it for granted.”
T.J. Otzelberger doesn’t take it for granted either. He knows how valuable his senior point guard is to his program.
“Understanding how much he impacts winning,” said Otzelberger. “How much he stands for everything we believe in terms of character, leadership, and what it means to be a Cyclone and put on that jersey. It’s probably more out of my own fear of ‘what is life going to be like without, or after?’ Fortunately I don’t have to think about that for a while.”
Lipsey made an immediate impact at Iowa State, being a big part of the team even during his freshman season. Now he’s missed the past couple of weeks with an MCL sprain. Despite not being on the floor, his impact is still felt, as he continues to help the younger guards.
“There’s nobody that takes more pride in leading by example and doing the right thing than Tamin Lipsey,” said Otzelberger. “He lays it on the line every single day in practice. He lays it on the lien every night out.”
“He’s brought so much even now that he’s out at practice, he’s giving me a peice of advice, or telling me what I should’ve done on the last play, or what to do on the next coming play,” added Jamarion Batemon, a freshman guard for the Cyclones. “Just being that voice for me to look up to, because he’s done it already. It’s been very valuable to me.”
Despite a career full of injuries, Lipsey continues to fight to get on the floor. Otzelberger says he’s progressing well from his current injury, and expects him back on the floor within the next two to four weeks. When he’s out there, Lipsey has only one goal in mind.
“I’m going to try to fight through and bumps and bruises that I have,” said Lipsey. “Whatever I can do to get on the floor to help my team and this program win.”
“His only motive and objective when he takes the court is to win the game, by any means necessary, possible, whatever he can do,” added Otzelberger.
