Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence, offense leaning on 'clutch' moments to start season

Trevor Lawrence has made winning plays down the stretch when the Jaguars needed it.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence stepped into a pass, launching  the football down the right sideline.

It dropped perfectly into the arms of a sprinting Brian Thomas Jr., who caught the ball and stepped out of bounds to stop the clock. It was the best pass of the season for Lawrence and it was followed by one that was equally good.

Lawrence tossed a dart to the opposite sideline to find Dyami Brown, a play that helped set up his “Slip Six” game winning touchdown against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Everyone will remember the madness that was Lawrence’s touchdown run, but not many remember how the Jaguars started that drive—with a sack.

“I took a bad sack earlier in that drive,” Lawrence told reporters during his media availability. “To be able to hit those shots down the field and kind of get us in position to where now we could actually just play regular football and get back on track was big.”

Head coach Liam Coen was forced to use one of his two timeouts after Lawrence’s sack, putting the team in a position where they couldn’t play through the middle of the field anymore.

It was on Thomas to win at the line of scrimmage and get past his defender, and on Lawrence to be able to place the ball in a small window.

It’s part of a trend of Lawrence and Jacksonville’s offense making clutch plays late to either seal or win games. Winning is a skill, a skill the Jaguars lost somewhere along the way. They couldn’t put the game away when given the chance over the last two seasons.

But in three consecutive games they’ve finished off their opponents when they needed to.

Lawrence and Thomas connected for a 46-yard reception to set up the go-ahead score against the Houston Texans. Lawrence found Hunter Long on a short first down completion against the San Francisco 49ers that sealed the game on the road.

And we know what happened in the final moments of their victory against the Kansas City Chiefs.

“Finding a way to make a play when you need it, when you have to, in order to win a game, that says a lot about our team,” Lawrence said.

Lawrence’s ability to move on quickly was huge against the Chiefs.

He had two turnovers, including a goal line fumble that turned into a 14-point swing in favor of the visitors. He responded well, though.

Lawrence completed 18-of-25 passes for 221 yards with a touchdown. He was also the team’s leading rusher with 54 yards and two touchdowns on two attempts.

Now, he’s displaying the ability to move on as the Jaguars prepare for the Seattle Seahawks.

“We play a really good Seattle team this week,” Lawrence said. “If you're still thinking about the game we just won, then that's a problem. We've got to move on.”

The Seahawks are coming off a 38-35 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where they allowed a season-high in points scored. Seattle allowed an average of less than 17 points per game to opponents during the first four weeks of the season thanks to its stingy defense.

The Seahawks have recorded seven interceptions this year, good for second-best in the NFL. They are top-five in takeaways (7) and sacks (13) across the league.

“The defense is playing really well. I think they're good on all three levels,” Lawrence said of Seattle’s defense. “They do a lot of things well, get after the quarterback, they're good against the run, they're just a solid, well-coached defense that flies around.”

Lawrence and the Jaguars will host the Seahawks on Oct. 12 at EverBank Stadium.
