Coaches with Tennessee ties competing for Milwaukee in 2025 MLB playoffs

Coaches with Tennessee ties are competing for Milwaukee in the 2025 MLB playoffs.

Milwaukee is the No. 1 seed in the National League during the 2025 Major League Baseball playoffs.

The Brewers have coaches with Tennessee ties in manager Pat Murphy and first base coach Julio Borbon.

Murphy was named manager ahead of the 2024 MLB season, after serving as a bench coach under Craig Counsell, who now manages the Cubs. In his first season leading Milwaukee, Murphy was named 2024 National League Manager of the Year.

He began his coaching career at Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee, serving as the Scots' baseball head coach through the 1983 season.

Murphy's first NCAA Division I head coaching job was at Notre Dame. He coached the Fighting Irish from 1988-94, compiling a 318-116-1 record and advanced to four NCAA Tournament regionals.

Murphy also served as head coach at Arizona State from 1995-2009, compiling a 629–284–1 record. He won four Pac-10 championships (2000, 2007-09) and was named the conference's Coach of the Year four times. Murphy became the youngest college head coach to reach 500 victories.

He was also a coach for San Diego and served as the Padres' interim manager in 2015.

Julio Borbon

Borbon played for Tennessee from 2005-07. He and the Vols advanced to the 2005 College World Series.

Borbon led the Vols with a .366 batting average and 19 stolen bases as a sophomore in 2006. He recorded a .345 batting average in his final season.

The former Vol was selected in the 2007 MLB supplemental draft (No. 35 overall) by Texas. He also played for the Cubs and Baltimore.

Borbon was named Milwaukee's first base coach in Dec. 2024.
