Roma striker Artem Dovbyk failed to score two penalties in last week’s 1-0 defeat to Lille in the Europa League. The Giallorossi eventually got three chances to equalise, due to encroachment. However, new taker Matias Soule also failed to score, as Berke Ozer pulled out a ridiculous third save.
Now, Dovbyk has revisited the controversial incident from the Ukraine national team training camp. He spoke about it in detail, looking back
“The match against Lille was a truly unpleasant moment in my career,” the striker said.
“My first at this level. On the contrary, the team supported everyone, and the next day, there was no talk about the fact that we didn’t score three penalties.
“We analysed the overall game in more depth. Since the game was difficult, we played in a way that wasn’t suited to our level. Then, on my own, I analysed and thought about the reason for the two errors.”
The forward told Ukrainian journalists, “The only thing I regret is not taking the third. Seriously, I’m not joking. It’s something I really regret.”
So, would he have scored the spot-kick that Soule missed? “I don’t know if I would have scored, but that’s how things are. There’s no point in talking about it now. I just know that I should have taken the penalty a third time, too, I’m sure of that.”
Dovbyk was linked with an exit from Roma in the summer. As no suitable offers knocked on Roma’s door, the Ukraine man stayed and is now slowly getting to grips with Gian Piero Gasperini’s system.
He has now replaced Evan Ferguson as the first-choice striker and despite the missed penalty against Lille, things are looking better for the ex-Girona player.
