Carencro football rides do-it-all star Chantz Babineaux to blowout win vs Lafayette

Carencro football's do-it-all star Chantz Babineaux goes off in the Bears' dominating win over Lafayette.

It only took two halves of play for Carencro football to snatch all the hype that was building up on Lafayette’s sideline for the two teams’ Week 6 matchup.

The Golden Bears scored touchdown after touchdown, having their way from start to finish to snag a 63-7 victory over the Mighty Lions on Thursday, Oct. 9. Leading the charge as he has all season long for the Bears was their do-it-all star Chantz Babineaux, who might be having the best senior campaign in the 337.

“He’s a special player,” Carencro coach Gavin Peters said. “I made a joke; I said, ‘I’m trying to figure out a way to give him another year of eligibility.' I just enjoy having him and he's been a safety blanket for me, and just a great player and a great teammate.”

With Babineaux leading the charge, the Bears are now one step closer to their goal of winning the Class 5A District 3 championship.

The Six-Seven connection

You can’t talk Carencro football this season without mentioning Nos. 6 and 7, sophomore quarterback Carson Gurzi and the three-star athlete Babineaux, respectively. The duo opened up the Bears’ first offensive play with a pass from Gurzi to Babineaux that went for 73 yards to the house. The one-play score was just the start for the duo.

“I love that kid, man,” Babineaux said on his connection with Gurzi. “He works really hard, he competes in the right way, he does everything the right way. I trust him to put the ball in the best place and I go get it every time.”

In just two quarters of play, Gurzi and Babineaux connected for around 150 yards and two touchdowns. Overall, Gurzi threw for nearly 300 yards and four touchdowns as well as rushing for a touchdown in three quarters of play.

Babineaux’s contribution for the Bears didn’t stop on offense. The Nicholls State commit caught two interceptions and returned one of thoe for a pick-six. That kind of defensive outing is nothing new for the two-way star that has been a menace for quarterbacks all season long.

“Chantz has got more picks in this year than I think he’s had in the last two years combined,” Peters said. “He continued that tonight and once again I’m just happy he’s on our team. He’s definitely one of the best football players I’ve ever coached and I hope the good Lord blesses me with a few more like him.”

Weapons everywhere

While Babineaux built off his stellar first half of the season, the Lions are searching for the momentum they started the year with. After a 3-0 start to the season, a tough district schedule was waiting for the Lions, including the Bears — one of three frontrunners for the district championship.

Lafayette struggled to contain the Bears’ explosive offense and fell prey to their physical defense, being shutout for three quarters. With defenders like Babineaux and more swarming every chance they got, the Lions’ usually productive offense went cold.

“It’s very hard,” Lafayette football coach Stephen Hearen said of stopping Babineaux. “It’s very hard when they have weapons everywhere, so you’re not just worried about him 'cause they got guys you gotta worry about too.”

The Lions will look to bounce back as they face yet another district frontrunner in Acadiana football next week.
