Serie A veteran and Roma manager has often been the centre of controversies of various kinds. During his time at Atalanta, there were accusations around doping.

While they never seemed serious as they were aimed at how La Dea players recover quickly, the Italian spoke to Corriere dello Sport in a lengthy interview

He was directly asked about these accusations and Gasperini dismissed them, making it clear that he believes in playing fairly.

He told the newspaper: “Whoever even thought of such a thing offended a club, myself, a staff, a group of players, and their work. When you can’t find the answers, you resort to gossip and the worst fantasies. We’ve always been clean. I believe in respecting the rules of sport. I’ve always fought doping. On the pitch, I hate simulations. I detest any form of subterfuge, dirty play.”

Further, the Italian also had some criticism for VAR.

He said: “That’s why I often get angry. Technical skill is one thing, cunning, simulation is another. Trying to dribble in the box to get a penalty falls within the realm of skill. And then I can’t stand VAR, which distances me from football as I’ve always understood it.”

Quick recovery from injuries were quite the norm at Atalanta and it was typically observed in the case of Giorgio Scalvini.

None of that has been seen at Roma so far, with Leon Bailey struggling for fitness since his arrival. The Jamaican has been out of action since he picked up a muscle injury early since his arrival.

Roma are eagerly awaiting his arrival and he looks set to return later this month.
