While Shiloh Christian and Fort Smith Southside aren’t playing for the conference lead, Friday’s game may go a long way toward determining playoff seeding.
The Saints travel to the Arkansas River Valley to face off with the Mavericks in a key 6A-West contest.
Currently, Shiloh and Southside are part of a four-way tie for third place in the conference at 1-1 along with Lake Hamilton and Mountain Home. But last week, the Saints defeated Mountain Home while the Mavericks prevailed against Lake Hamilton.
At the moment, defending 6A state champion Greenwood and Van Buren share the conference lead at 2-0.
Shiloh Christian is 3-2 overall, having lost to two defending state champions - Greenwood in the conference opener two weeks ago and also defending Oklahoma Class 3A champion Tulsa Lincoln Christian.
The Saints’ offense is led by junior quarterback Cole Creighton, who has thrown for more than 1,600 yards and 13 touchdowns thus far. Two of Creighton’s receivers, seniors Zane Sluyter and Chandler Kemp, have combined to catch 68 passes for more than 1,100 yards and nine TDs - seven for Kemp.
Shiloh’s defense has intercepted 10 passes this season, with senior cornerback Zander Salter picking off three of those.
Southside (4-1), which missed the playoffs a season ago, has already equaled its win total from 2024 and is 2-0 at home this year. Along with beating Lake Hamilton last week, the Mavericks defeated city rival Northside in the season opener.
Like Shiloh, Southside also brings a solid passing attack into Friday’s game, with senior quarterback Blake Forsgren passing for nearly 1,000 yards and 12 TDs. Senior receiver Peyton Zimmerman has caught 37 passes for 549 yards and seven TDs.
On defense, senior linebackers Ethan Dunn and Malachi Warren - a Northside transfer - are the team’s top two tacklers with 53 and 39, respectively, and both have 7 tackles for loss along with a combined three sacks.
This will be Shiloh’s first visit to Southside. Last season, the Saints defeated the Mavericks, 38-20, in Springdale on Shiloh’s home field.
