Arsenal head coach Renée Slegers says that the team want to achieve much more off the back of a hugely disappointing run of results.
The Gunners are winless in four games in all competitions and they already find themselves with work to do to pull themselves into the Barclays Women’s Super League’s title race.
When speaking to the media ahead of this weekend’s fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion, Arsenal boss Slegers didn’t want to focus too much on title race statistics from the past and she says that the team are focused on turning their poor form around.
“That was last season,” Slegers said when commenting on the form that won London rivals Chelsea the 2024/2025 title. “I know there’s certain statistics from previous seasons. This is this season and we’re still early in the season. We can’t control what the others do, but we know that we have to do what we can do.
“We’re very disappointed and not happy with the last three results in the WSL. We definitely want more and that’s what we’re going after. It’s all we can do and let’s start on Sunday.”
Arsenal simply can’t afford any further slip ups but Slegers says that Sunday’s game brings no additional pressure for her side.
She said “There are extremely high expectations on ourselves and they’re the very strongest. Of course, we want to and need to win more.”
Latest opponents Brighton & Hove Albion can operate in different systems and Slegers says that it could be hard to predict what The Seagulls will do this weekend.
She said “I think they do a lot of interesting things. They’re unpredictable in the way that they set up. Both in and out of possession, they change from game-to-game and they seem to have a really interesting philosophy. I think they play good football, it’s going to be a good opposition. I have a lot of respect for what Dario [Vidošić] is doing with Brighton.
“We’re prepared for different scenarios in this game because they can come out and do different things. Just like last year, their set-ups were different in the home and away games, so we’ll see what they will bring on Sunday. We’ll have to prepare for different scenarios.”
Arsenal’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion kicks-off at 2.30pm on Sunday afternoon. Tickets remain on-sale and can be purchased by clicking here.
