Genoa turns attention to brotherhood on its sideline in NBC.
Genoa wondered why Eastwood's Luidhardt brothers were getting so much attention.
Logan Routson returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown and added a score from 3 yards out Friday as the Comets defeated visiting Eastwood 42-27 in the Northern Buckeye Conference. Genoa (7-1, 5-0) has won its last seven games.
"WTOL and the Blade talked about the Luidhardt connection for three pages," Routson said. "There are 11 brothers over here — 53 brothers. There's two brothers over here at Genoa that go the job done. That motivated me. I've got my twin brother and we've got 53 brothers.
"Drew (Luidhardt) is one of my best friends, but how about Genoa steamrolling the NBC right now? Get them some attention."
Routson's twin brother Ryan Routson helped set up Genoa's first score with a 19-yard run to the 1. Quarterback Myles Mollenhauer capped the drive by reaching the ball across the goal line.
"They are the glue," Comets coach Bill Fisher said of the Routsons. "They are the competitors. They are the motivators. They are the bar setters. They don't get the stats of the other brothers or the attention, but they've been leaders and fighters and winners.
"I'm glad they're Comets."
Genoa led 21-14 after Routson's kickoff return and 35-21 following his touchdown run late in the third quarter.
"We practiced that all week," Routson said. "Coach (Chris) Matthews knew that was happening. I ran back the same play six times this week. (The run) play we put in in August. We're comfortable with it and we know we'll execute.
"It's good for at least 3 yards, I took it 79 yards last week. That play is told and true. I have Alex (Materni) blocking for me."
The key play in the game was likely Carter Miller's recovery of an Eastwood fumble on a flea flicker late in the first half. Jaxon Magnone took a wildcat snap and capped the ensuing drive with a short scoring run for a 28-14 advantage at the half.
"That was a great feeling," Materni said. "I knew Carter had it in him. I was pumped; the momentum shifted. We drug them into deep water at that point."
Materni rushed for a touchdown and a 14-7 lead in the second quarter, and Mollenhauer punched in his second score for a 42-21 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Eastwood (6-2, 4-1) now trails Genoa by one game in the standings.
"It gives us an edge to finish the job of being conference champs," Fisher said. "That's the main goal. Are you willing to put in the work to be in this position? We have to stay humble and make sure we get the job done."
