For all the offensive accolades Palmer achieved in college and the NFL, his team pulled off its biggest win of the season by way of defensive play. Behind a stifling defensive effort, Santa Margarita handed No. 6 ranked Mater Dei (6-2) their second loss of the season in a 7-6 decision Friday night.
Mater Dei struggled all evening on offense, but was able to take the early lead after a Ryan Hopkins to Kayden Dixon-Wyatt 11-yard touchdown pass.
Santa Margarita (6-2) would take the lead with 5:05 remaining in the game when USC commit Trent Mosley scored on a 2-yard run. The Eagles’ defense would on in the final minutes to give Palmer arguably his biggest win yet as Santa Margarita head coach.
