Everton have been searching for young attacking flair that fits David Moyes’ rebuilding plans. Their hunt briefly led them to France. The Toffees’ scouts admired Malick Fofana’s rise at Lyon, where the winger constantly threatened down the flanks.
He scored 11 goals and delivered six assists across 41 appearances last season. That record caught the attention of Premier League clubs seeking pace and creativity. Everton’s recruitment team made their first move early in the summer and offered around €35 million, according to French outlets. Fulham, guided by Marco Silva, soon entered the race. They pressed hard to convince the Belgian youngster to move to England.
Agent reveals why Malick Fofana rejected Everton in the summer
De Morgenvia Sport Witness later reported that both Everton and Fulham returned in October with better proposals. They agreed to meet Lyon’s €45 million valuation. Despite their efforts, Fofana stood firm and rejected both advances. His agent, Frederico Pena, said the winger values Lyon’s faith in him and doesn’t want to risk that comfort.
The club’s general manager, Michael Gerlinger, explained that Fofana and his family put the sporting aspect before financial gain. The Belgian chose to stay for another season to focus on steady development. He even turned down Al-Ittihad’s offer from Saudi Arabia to stay loyal to Lyon. This decision showed how strongly the 20-year-old prefers stability over money. For now, Lyon’s project matches his ambitions, even if it means turning down Premier League opportunities.
“Fofana feels very valued at Lyon. He didn’t want to risk that. After speaking with Fofana, his agent, and his family, it was clear that the sporting project is also important to them. And that project is staying with Lyon for at least another year.”
Everton have since shifted focus to other targets. They plan to pursue Kalvin Phillips in January and are exploring a move for Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee.
Why Missing Out on Fofana Might Be a Blessing?

Everton didn’t land Fofana, but that might work in their favour. The Belgian wanted to join a Champions League club, which showed his lack of full commitment to a rebuilding side. If the Toffees went on to sign a player with half-hearted motivation, it often brings trouble later. Fofana’s skill set excites fans, yet he still needs to grow.
He must improve his defensive work and produce consistent attacking returns. Everton instead focused on balance this summer. They aimed to mix experience with youth who could become reliable options in time. Their signing of Tyler Dibling from Southampton fits that plan perfectly. Rejecting Fofana saved them from an expensive risk and kept their strategy intact. Everton now continue with a clear purpose. Their patience and focus on fitting players could prove smarter than chasing talents unwilling to give their all.
