The laid an egg in John Mateer’s return from a hand injury that required surgery, mainly due to the Washington State Cougars transfer’s inaccuracy in throwing the ball. Mateer threw three interceptions against the Texas Longhorns in a 23-6 Red River Rivalry loss on Saturday in Dallas.
With that said, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit doesn’t see OU as doomed. Quite the opposite. Herbstreit believes the Sooners have a smooth landing ahead with the way their schedule plays out.
Oklahoma plays the , , , , Missouri Tigers, and the rest of the way after a 5-1 start.
“Disappointing day, but everything is in front of them,” Herbstreit stressed on the broadcast as the clock was ticking down in the fourth quarter with the game out of hand for the Sooners.
Ahead of OU are five ranked teams. Herbstreit may be underselling the Sooners’ challenge to close out the schedule.
Brent Venables comments on rest of Oklahoma’s schedule
Sooners head football coach Brent Venables isn’t worried about his program folding after its first loss. Venables still believes he has a great team that’s capable of rallying together and closing the campaign strongly.
“Going in we had a heck of a team. Done a good job of improving as the season has gone on through all the different challenges of a season. Through defeat, you learn a lot about yourself. You get better from it. I believe in these guys. I hurt for them. I know how much they hurt and how much they invested into this moment. But you've got to be able to carry that weight that goes with it,” Venables said at the postgame presser.
“You've got to take the bad with the good, and some of these toughest moments and challenges, if we are who I know and believe we are, then these guys will respond the right way. Learn from some of the mistakes that we made today and have to learn through a loss, which is tough. But these guys, they're very invested. I know how they'll respond. We've got incredible, strong leadership in the locker room. This is a team that still believes and this is a team that's still together.”
Regardless of what comes next, Venables sounds confident his guys can handle it. But the goodwill may soon fade for a program that’s hitting the toughest stretch on its 2025 calendar.
