Anfield's King in Crisis? British Press Claims FSG Are Beginning to Regret Massive Deal
The British newspaper Mirror's raised serious questions over Mohamed Salah’s current form claiming that his recent decline has left Liverpool’s Fenway Sports Group FSG in difficult position after making rare exception to their long standing policy of not renewing contracts for players over 30.
Salah’s Contract: Exception to the Rule
According to Mirror, Liverpool’s owners "broke their own rules" when they renewed Salah’s contract last April for 2 more year despite his repeated hints that he was entering his "final season" with the club.
The decision was driven largely by fan pressure following years of decisive goals & assists that'd cemented Salah’s legendary status at Anfield.
However the newspaper added that only 6 month after the renewal, many observers are beginning to think FSG’s original stance on older players might have been right.
Decline in Performance
The report highlighted that Salah’s output has dipped noticeably:
- 2 goal in his last 9 match of last season.
- 2 more goal in 7 match this season.
- That’s one goal every 4 game a far cry from his prolific best. The paper also noted drop in creativity pointing out that Salah's only 3 assist in his last 17 Premier League match with his on pitch spark "largely faded"

Lessons from Past Decisions
Mirror drew comparisons to former Liverpool forwards Sadio Mane & Roberto Firmino whose contracts weren't extended once they reached their 30s.
- Mane was sold to Bayern Munich in 2022 at age 30.
- Firmino was allowed to leave for Al Ahli in 2023 at age 31.
In contrast Salah (now 33 years old) was the only member of that legendary trio to receive new long term deal running until summer 2027.
"Time to Repay the Faith"
The report concluded that Salah now owes it to the club & ownership to "repay the faith shown in him" and silence growing doubts about his sharpness.
Mirror wrote that the Egyptian must prove FSG were right to make exception for him and justify their decision "on the pitch, not just by reputation"
