The Pennsylvania high school football season is entering its final weeks, as many of the top programs in the Keystone State were in action.
La Salle College tops the latest Pennsylvania high school football rankings after a 42-0 throttling of Monsignor Bonner last week. Following the Explorers in the ranks is Central Catholic, St. Joseph’s Prep School, Malvern Prep and Harrisburg, respectively.
Which other Pennsylvania high school football teams make the list in our latest set of Top 25 rankings of the regular season?
The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.
Here is the latest Florida high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Oct. 13.
1. La Salle College (6-1)
The La Salle College Explorers just edges out Central Catholic for the top spot in the state of Pennsylvania as they are coming off a 42-0 dismantling of Monsignor Bonner last week.
The Explorers has bounced back nicely after Sep. 26’s loss to Roman Catholic, 39-36.
Senior quarterback Gavin Sidwar, a Missouri commit, 20 of 34 for 324 yards and four touchdowns in a 31-20 win over No. 4 St. Joseph’s Prep School.
Next up for the Explorers is a home matchup against Cardinal O’Hara (5-2).
2. Central Catholic (7-1)
Make it seven-straight victories for the Vikings, with the team rolling to a 35-6 romp over Norwin. Central Catholic has been one of the state’s hottest teams as they’ve won seven straight victories since losing to La Salle College at the beginning of the season.
Vikings’ sophomore quarterback Owen Herrick, who completed 90 of 161 passes for 1,344 yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception. Another player that has had a strong season for Central Catholic is junior running back Roman Thompson, who has rushed for 573 yards and 19 touchdowns.
3. St. Joseph’s Prep School (2-4)
The St. Joseph’s Prep School Hawks were coming off a 31-20 loss to No. 1 La Salle College a couple weeks ago and needed to bounce back.
Hawks were able to get back into the win column when they just squeaked by Roman Catholic, 40-39, last week. Playing a national schedule certainly has impacted the overall win/loss record for the team, but make no mistake that this is still one of Pennsylvania’s top high school football teams.
St. Joseph’s Prep looks to make it back-to-back wins this week when they take on Monsignor Bonner at Franklin Field.
4. Malvern Prep (4-1)
After starting the season with a loss to La Salle College over in Ocean City, New Jersey, Malvern Prep has reeled off five straight victories since then and is on a roll heading into the final weeks.
The Friars are coming off a 42-13 thumping of Germantown Academy, leaving them now sitting at 5-1 with four contests to go against Haverford School, Episcopal Academy, William Penn Charter and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.
5. Harrisburg (7-0)
It wasn’t another blowout win for the Cougars as they just narrowly got by Cumberland Valley, 21-16, last week.
Sitting at 8-0 with a couple games remaining, Harrisburg has proven themselves as one of the state’s best as they have consistently won, no matter who they’ve run up against.
With running back Messiah Mickens sidelined, junior Princeton Dent has picked up the slack and has rushed for a team-high 908 yards and 11 touchdowns this season.
Harrisburg finishes the regular season off with home games against Central Dauphin and Central Dauphin East, respectively.
