Ousmane Dembele returned to his roots in emotional fashion on Sunday celebrating his Ballon d'Or victory in the French city of Evreux where his remarkable football journey began.

The Paris Saint Germain winger claimed football’s most prestigious individual prize after sensational season that saw him lift the domestic treble Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and the UEFA Champions League with the Parisian giants.

Dembele edged out Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal to win the award capping off campaign that cemented his place among the game’s elite.

Fans packed the Evreux town square to welcome their hometown hero chanting "Ballon d’Or for Ousmane" as the 28 year old appeared with the golden trophy in his hands.

Despite currently recovering from injury, Dembele also visited Stade Mathieu Bodmer, home of his 1st club, Evreux FC where his footballing story began.

"It’s extraordinary to have grown up here .. it’s an honour, You've been my source of strength" Dembele told the crowd.

In heartfelt tribute, Mayor Guy Lefrand awarded the French international the city’s medal of honour praising his contribution to the community and the positive image he has given Evreux.

"This medal's his name engraved on it , there's only one, I rarely present it but today I'm very proud to give it to Ousmane" Lefrand told RMC Sport.
