Colts vs Chargers predictions
Here are our early thoughts on the spread and total for this week’s game. We will have a full game preview (with a best bet and SGP) later in the week.
Early Colts vs Chargers spread pick: Colts +1.5
The Indianapolis Colts will be making their second trip to Los Angeles this season after losing their only game of the season in this stadium back in Week 4 to the Los Angeles Rams, 27-20. This time, they get a Los Angeles Chargers team that just continues to be decimated by injury.
Fortunately for the Chargers, they were able to overcome all their injuries with a 29-27 win in Miami on Sunday. That prevented them from going on a three-game winning streak, but there were still concerns coming from that game against one of the worst teams in the NFL.
They allowed 128 yards rushing to De’Von Achane on only 16 carries and relied heavily on picking off Tua Tagovailoa to get any stops on defense. While Daniel Jones did throw an interception last week, it was only his third on the season on 180 pass attempts. The Chargers had only three interceptions in the previous five games before last week.
Between Jonathan Taylor running the ball and Jones taking care of the football in the passing game, the Colts will be able to put up points on this defense. The injuries on the offensive end for the Chargers will hamper them in keeping up with Indy on the scoreboard.
Early Colts vs Chargers total pick: Over 48.5
After a solid start for the Chargers defense, they have now given up 27 points in each of the last two weeks to much lesser offenses than this Colts offense. The Chargers' defense ranks 31st in passing against the blitz, 24th in defending designed runs, and 23rd in overall rushing efficiency.
Meanwhile, the Colts' offense ranks either first or second in the NFL in all three of those categories. The Colts have scored at least 29 points in every game except for their last trip here to SoFi, and even in that game, they had a player drop the ball crossing the goalline and a holding call brought back a long Taylor touchdown.
While the Chargers do have injury concerns on offense, they do still have some advantages in the matchup with the Colts. The Chargers rank first in rushing outside the tackles and third in rushing out of shotgun. Meanwhile, the Colts' defense ranks 19th and 20th in those two categories, respectively.
This score line could be very similar to the one the Chargers just had last week with the Miami Dolphins, where there were 56 total points scored. Both teams should be able to reach the 20s, and the Colts could very easily reach the 30s with all their mismatches.
