JOPLIN, MO. — High school and collegiate sports are heating up in the four states, and we’ve got you covered with our top five plays from the past week of local action.
Play #5: Webb City’s Abby Sargent (Diving catch with bases loaded vs. Neosho) —
In a Webb City-Neosho softball matchup, Cardinals infielder Abby Sargent made a diving catch on a hard line drive to save what likely would have been an RBI base knock for Neosho as the bases were loaded.
Play #4: Missouri Southern’s Addysen Alvis (Back-to-back kills vs. Pitt State) —
In a rivalry matchup on the volleyball court, Missouri Southern’s Addysen Alvis was active early, delivering back-to-back kills to help lift the Lions to a set one win. MSSU went on to claim the victory in a five-set thriller.
Play #3: Grove’s Kayden Mitchum (Pass breakup in the end zone to deny a TD) —
In the Fort Gibson-Grove high school football matchup, the Tigers nearly had a picture-perfect touchdown reception in the end zone, but Grove’s Kayden Mitchum made an incredible pass breakup, getting his hand on the ball just in the nick of time to prevent a Fort Gibson score.
Play #2: Missouri Southern’s Huston Rotich (75-yard touchdown reception on third play from scrimmage) —
In a road matchup against Emporia State, Missouri Southern Football wide receiver Huston Rotich started things out with a bang, hauling in a pass across the middle of the field from QB Tillman Martin before turning on the jets and bursting to the goal line for a 75-yard touchdown on just the third play from scrimmage.
Play #1: Pittsburg State’s Austin Schmitt (Rushing TD on a fake field goal) —
It’s not every day you see a kicker score a touchdown at any level of football ,but that was the case for the Pitt State Gorillas in a 34-10 win over Washburn. Lining up for a short field goal from the 8-yard line against the Ichabods, Pitt State elected for a fake field goal as Schmitt snuck by the defense and waltzed into the end zone for a rushing TD. Schmitt accounted for 16 of the Gorillas 34 points in the win.
