The Washington Commanders gave away the game to the Chicago Bears. Instant analysis from the 25-24 loss.
The Washington Commanders fell to 3-3 on the season after Monday night's 25-24 loss to the Chicago Bears.
It was a disappointing loss for Washington because of its numerous mistakes. Quarterback Jayden Daniels missed wide receiver Deebo Samuel in the first quarter for a touchdown. Making matters worse, the pass was intercepted, and the Bears turned it into points.
Rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt fumbled in Washington territory in the first half, giving the Bears a short field and they took advantage, scoring a touchdown to take a 13-0 lead. The Commanders clawed back, taking the lead and looked to be in control until mistakes, including another turnover with around three minutes remaining, that led to the game-winning field goal.
Here's more from Washington's loss to Chicago.
Final score: Bears 25, Commanders 24
Numbers to know
- 3: Washington turned the ball over three times, all resulting in a Bears' score. Chicago scored 13 points off Washington turnovers, including the game-winner. Let's not forget the first turnover took points off the board for the Commanders.
- 145-124: Everyone believed Washington had the rushing advantage coming in. The Commanders were the NFL's 3rd-ranked rushing offense, while the Bears were the 24th. Defensively, Chicago was 29th against the run, while Washington was 17th. The Bears outrushed the Commanders 145-124. Struggling RB D'Andre Swift ran for a season-high 108 yards. Interestingly enough, Swift's only 100-yard game last season came against Washington. Outside of turnovers, this was where the game was decided.
- 61: Rookie RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt ran for 61 yards on 17 carries. Bill earned every yard on Monday, and his fumble was costly.
- 46: Chris Moore's 46 receiving yards led Washington.
- 55: Swift's 55-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown on third down in the fourth quarter was a backbreaker. Safety Quan Martin made a poor tackle attempt, and Swift made them pay.
It was over when.....
Jayden Daniels mishandled the handoff to Croskey-Merritt, giving the Bears the football close to midfield and ensuring they wouldn't have to do much to get into field-goal range. It was inexcusable. Washington needed one yard and fumbled the game away. There was no way the Commanders' defense was going to get a stop — and they didn't.

What's next?
The Commanders head back on the road for the next two weeks. They face the Dallas Cowboys next week. Washington has a chance to put up big numbers against the Cowboys' defense, but the same could be said for the Dallas offense against the Washington defense. Expect plenty of points in a must-win game for both teams.
