David Alaba’s career took a massive hit with his last ACL injury, and despite his best efforts, the player looks far from his pre-injury level.
Given his age, the stage of his career and the grim chances of making a comeback from such a gruesome injury, his future at Real Madrid now looks more bleak than ever before.
After all, even recovering from that setback has not stopped him from facing other minor hiccups on his way back and the competition at centre-back, all of a sudden, is extremely steep, giving the player few chances of making a real comeback.
Decision made
As relayed by Defensa Central in a recent update, Real Madrid have made a decision over Alaba’s future and it is that his relationship with the club will not continue beyond this season.
His contract ends next summer and the club have no intention of offering a renewal.

The club’s decision, needless to say, is understandable given that the player’s prominence has already seen a steep fall and that he no longer has it in his legs to play week in and week out at the highest level.
There has been talk of a departure in the winter transfer window, but that is seemingly ruled out now as Real Madrid and Xabi Alonso see him to be a vital part of the squad given the long season ahead.
Alaba is highly respected by Real Madrid administration and dressing room for his vital contributions before his injury and Alonso unsurprisingly wants to keep him in the loop throughout the season.
His path thereafter may take him to Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga where he has played in the past as well. A move to a lower-tier league is not ruled out as well.
