Post the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Detroit Lions game on Sunday Night, Lions’ safety Brian Branch got into a fight, which led to him being suspended. This incident took place just moments after the final whistle, giving rise to reactions from all over the league. Branch is now likely to face a one-game ban, as the Lions prepare for their upcoming game.
Detroit Lions’ Brian Branch suspended by NFL for one game
Moments after the final whistle of the Chiefs vs. Lions game on Sunday night, Brian Branch of the Detroit Lions initiated a fight with Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. Branch struck him in the face, pushing him back to the ground. Chiefs’ running back Isiah Pacheco tried holding Branch back after his initial strike. However, with Smith-Schuster running back at him and other players getting involved, the situation got slightly out of control.
Consequently, NFL officials openly expressed their displeasure with Branch’s behavior. As reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan made a statement. He said about Branch, “Your aggressive, non-football act was entirely unwarranted, posed a serious risk of injury, and clearly violated the standards of conduct and sportsmanship expected of NFL players. Your conduct reflected poorly on the NFL and has no place in our game.” Branch is reportedly appealing his one-game ban.
Moreover, in a post-match press conference, Dan Campbell, head coach for the Lions, shared his views on Branch’s actions. “Let me start with this, I love Brian Branch, but what he did is inexcusable and it’s not going to be accepted here. It’s not what we do, it’s not what we’re about,” he said. “I apologized to coach [Andy] Reid and the Chiefs and Schuster. That’s not OK. That’s not what we do here, and it’s not gonna be OK. He knows it, our team knows it. That’s not what we do.”
Branch later apologized while speaking to reporters, saying, “I did a real childish thing, I’m tired of people doing stuff in between plays and refs don’t catch it. They be trying to bully me out there. I shouldn’t have did it, it was childish.” (via NFL)
