Farrell product ‘Flash’ finding his stride at YSU

The former Farrell star's explosive style of play was on display around the Valley week after week for the Steelers. Now he's proving it at the Division I level.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – From high school to college, Kylon ‘Flash’ Wilson has shown plenty of reasons why the nickname fits.

“I just love it because it’s like coming out of high school and I was just overlook because of my height,” Wilson said. “So I just appreciate Coach Doug [Phillips] and them for giving me a chance to come here and be with the team. I love it here. It’s a brotherhood here, like even off the field as well.”

The former Farrell High School star‘s explosive style of play was on display around the Valley week after week for the Steelers. Now he’s proving it at the Division I level at Youngstown State.

“He can do so much. He can run from the backfield. He can, you know, hit the hitches, the bubbles,” Phillips said. “But we also knew he could be a deep threat, and they all want to be deep threats.”

The Slippery Rock transfer hopes to become an even more consistent deep threat after posting a career-high 102 receiving yards, highlighted by a 37-yard touchdown against North Dakota.

“That was positive to see us hit Flash in stride, he has the speed to get behind the secondary, and we know our quarterback has the arm to get it beyond,” Phillips said. “It was great to see, we’ve been working hard on that ever since spring, and the start to see that come to fruition, it’s a positive thing for our offense.”

Through six games, Wilson has already compiled more than 600 all-purpose yards, and it may get a little tougher to contain Flash in the games ahead.

“I’m explosive. So, when I get that ball back there, I be hating when coach tells me to fair catch,” Wilson said. But he wants to see the block and then once he sees them block and I get it, I’m going. I’m gonna break on this year to promise,” Wilson said.

Wilson and the ‘Guins are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 18, as they hit to road to face No. 10 Illinois State.
