Former Ohio State center Nick Mangold in need of kidney transplant due to chronic disease

Former Ohio State and New York Jets center Nick Mangold is in need of a kidney transplant after a "rough summer" dealing with a chronic disease.

Former Ohio State and New York Jets center Nick Mangold revealed on social media that he needs a kidney transplant stemming from a chronic kidney disease diagnosis caused by a genetic defect.

On Oct. 14, Mangold posted a note addressed to both Jets and Buckeyes communities, revealing that he had a "rough summer" and is undergoing dialysis while searching for a donor. Mangold was diagnosed with the disease in 2006 but now needs a kidney donor with type O blood.

"Unfortunately, I do not have any family to donate at this time, so this is why I'm reaching out to you, our NY Jets and Ohio State communities," Mangold wrote on social media.

"While this has been a tough stretch, I'm staying positive and focused on the path ahead," Mangold continued. "I'm looking forward to better days and getting back to full strength soon. I'll see you all at MetLife Stadium & The Shoe very soon."

Ohio State's Nick Mangold (55) congratulates teammate Troy Smith (10) after Smith scored his second touchdown against San Diego in the first half of their game at Ohio Stadium, September 17, 2005.

Mangold was the starting center for the Buckeyes for three years and a member of the 2002 national championship team. He was drafted by the Jets with the No. 29 overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft and played for 11 years in the NFL, earning All-Pro honors twice and making seven Pro Bowls.

The former Buckeyes center steered possible donors to the Columbia University Department of Surgery website.

Mangold instructed those want to test their compatibility to "use my full name, Nicholas Mangold, and my birthday, 1/13/1984" once they click on the button "I want to donate my kidney."

He ended his post saying he hoped to be back at MetLife Stadium and Ohio Stadium "very soon."
