Jerry Jones makes bizarre 'real strength' comment on Cowboys' pass rush originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Dallas Cowboys' defense has come under serious criticism over the production in the first six weeks of the season, with Matt Eberflus' defense getting gashed routinely to be one of the worst defenses in football.
Micah Parsons was traded to help the Dallas run defense, and in four of the six games this year, the Cowboys have given up at least 144 yards on the ground per game, with Rico Dowdle's 183 yards the latest dagger.
But while the run defense is bad, so too is the pass rush, or lack thereof, with James Houston (3.5 sacks) leading the Cowboys, while others like Sam Williams, Marshawn Kneeland, Dante Fowler, Osa Odighizuwa, and Kenny Clark have been seen sparingly in the backfield.
So, the pass rush issues are glaring, yet here comes owner Jerry Jones with his take on the defense.
“I'm going to be pretty general here because I like what we're doing over there defensively,” Jerry said. “Anybody can tell you there's some adjustments that we need to make. We've got a lot of personnel, especially in our pass rush. We're deep in pass rush. We were really not deep last year because we had so many injuries and Sam Williams, [Micah] Parsons, people like that, [DeMarcus] Lawrence.
"Well, we're not in that shape this year, we've got a real strength there. I think we'll use that as we look and adjust in the games ahead.”

Is Cowboys' pass rush as good as Jerry Jones says?
A real strength, Jerry? Dallas is 23rd for sacks (11), which doesn't scream a "strength" to us, and the fact that quarterbacks who have been struggling like Caleb Williams (298 yards, four touchdowns, 142.6 passer rating) and Bryce Young (199 yards, three touchdowns, 114.8 passer rating) were only sacked a combined, once when facing Dallas' defense.
And don't get us started on Russell Wilson looking like an All-Pro in between being poor and ultimately benched for Jaxson Dart.
You will be hard-pressed to find many who think Dallas' pass rush is a strength right now, simply because the play on the field hasn't backed that up (aside from the Jets game in which five of Dallas' 11 total sacks came from).
Is the pass-rushing unit a "real strength" for Dallas? It might be eventually, but right now? I think you know the answer to that.
