Virginia high school football game canceled due to lack of healthy players

The forfeit bug seems to be running rampant throughout the Old Dominion State as a second canceled Virginia high school football game was announced on Tuesday evening.

According to an announcement by Grayson County athletics, the Blue Devils’ contest against Galax on Friday has been canceled as the Maroon Tide do not have enough healthy players to compete in the contest.

“This Friday’s Varsity Football Game scheduled for 10/17 @ Galax HS has been CANCELLED at this time. Galax does not have enough healthy players to compete. This will be a forfeit win for Grayson County and will not be rescheduled.“

Grayson County will improve to 3-4 on the Virginia high school football season after losing three straight games following a 2-1 start to the 2025 campaign. The Blue Devils last two losses have come by a combined three points, with Grayson County falling to Virginia, 27-26, and George Wythe, 28-26.

For Galax, it is the third forfeit loss of the season as they also had forfeited contests against Graham and
Radford, respectively.

The Maroon Tide through five games had scored only 19 points, all coming in one game, a 49-19 loss to Fort Chiswell last week. Galax is in transition this season after longtime head coach Shane Allen stepped down last fall after eight seasons at the helm of the Maroom Tide.

The forfeit was the second such announced decision regarding a Virginia high school football game on the dais as John Marshall‘s athletic department on Tuesday also put out a statement that they have forfeited this week’s contest against Northampton due to a lack of available players as well.
