For the third straight year, Carver-Hawkeye Arena is sold out for all of the Iowa women’s baskebtall home games.
“Our success here is so, so hugely reliant on fans because it makes it so much fun to win with them,” said Jan Jensen, Iowa women’s basketball head coach. “With your good fans you can kind of tolerate that tough loss because they’re pushing you through. I think there’s a genuine feel for most people, but along with that there’s obviously more spotlight and more critical thinkers, too.”
For Iowa’s newcomers, playing in an arena so passionate for women’s basketball is a moment they’ve been dreaming of for some time.
“It’s unimaginable, it’s unthinkable. You can’t really feel it until it’s actually here so I can’t wait,” said Chazadi ‘Chit-Chat’ Wright, an Iowa transfer from Georgia Tech.
“I’ve been waiting so long and I committed kind of early compared to some people, so being here is kind of surreal,” said Journey Houston, an Iowa freshman from Davenport. “The fans at Iowa are great, so I’m just most excited to you know be in that environment and play for them.”
The young Hawkeyes said they are ready to play in one of women’s college basketball’s loudest environments.
“I committed junior year, so I’ve been waiting quite a second for this, but just to play in front of a sold out crowd every home game is going to be special,” said Addie Deal, an Iowa freshman. “The fan base and just the support is insane. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
“I think the fan base is with us, and I think they feel that. If we look at anything in our lives that we’re a part of, if you think of a club you might be a part of, a neighborhood you’re a part of or whatever, when you feel vested and you feel the folks that you’re with feel vested, there’s just kind of an ease to that get-together, right? If it’s a monthly club, it’s a weekly club, it’s like you look forward to that club,” Jensen said.
The first chance fans get to see the Iowa women’s basketball team play inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena is an exhibition game against Ashland on Oct. 30.
