There is finally a sense of relief around Real Madrid, as Ferland Mendy has returned to training with the rest of the group after being sidelined for nearly six months.
he French full-back last featured for the club on April 26, during the Copa del Rey final, before suffering a serious muscle injury that required surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process.
It has now been 171 days since Mendy last played a competitive match. What initially appeared to be a minor issue soon turned into a long and painful recovery.
What happened to Mendy?
The defender suffered a tear of the proximal rectus femoris tendon in his right quadriceps, an injury that forced him to go under the knife and spend several months in recovery.
At first, Real Madrid’s medical staff had estimated a 10 to 12-week recovery period. However, Mendy’s healing process took longer than expected as the affected area needed more time to fully recover.
The Frenchman wanted to make sure he regained complete confidence in his movements and eliminated any lingering pain or fear before stepping back onto the pitch.

In the end, what was supposed to be a three-month layoff turned into a 20-week absence.
He has a history
Unfortunately, this is not Mendy’s first long-term setback since joining Real Madrid in 2019. His time at the Santiago Bernabeu has been plagued by injuries.
In total, he has suffered 17 separate injuries, missing 112 matches and spending 626 days on the sidelines.
His fragile fitness record has often disrupted his momentum and raised doubts about his long-term reliability at the club.
Mendy had previously returned from an injury to play in the Copa del Rey final but was forced off after just a few minutes with the same problem.
Now, although he has been given the medical green light to rejoin team training, he is still not considered fully fit.
As expected, both the player and manager Xabi Alonso are taking a cautious approach to his return, ensuring there is no risk of relapse.
