Ghana has secured its spot for the fifth time in history after their victory over Comoros (1-0). Let’s revisit the Black Stars’ first four appearances in the final stage of the World Cup.
In 2006, Ghana was one of seven debutants alongside Angola, Ivory Coast, Czech Republic, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, and Ukraine. With the youngest squad in the tournament (25 years and 2 months), Ratomir Dujković managed to secure second place in Group E (6 points).
After a loss to Italy (0-2), the Ghanaians defeated Czech Republic (2-0) and the United States (2-1). The last-16 proved a step too high, ending in defeat to Brazil (0-3).
South Africa 2010
Ghana finished second in its group in 2010, beating Serbia (1-0) and drawing with Australia (1-1), qualifying despite a defeat to Germany (0-1). In the round of 16, Asamoah Gyan and his teammates outlasted the United States (2-1, after extra time), but their journey ended in the quarterfinals against Uruguay (1-2 after extra time).
Brazil 2014
On their third appearance, Ghana failed to advance beyond the group stage. They finished bottom of their group with just one point (a draw against Germany 2-2, and two defeats to the United States 1-2 and Portugal 1-2).
Qatar 2022
Defeats to Portugal (2-3) and Uruguay (0-2) were offset by a single win over South Korea (3-2). André Ayew and his teammates exited the tournament at the bottom of Group H with three points.
