A little over two months after he committed to North Carolina, four-star 2027 running back Amir Brown has backed off his pledge to the Tar Heels, according to Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett.
The Rolesville (N.C.) star initially gave his verbal to Bill Belichick and Co. back on August 3, but turned around and visited Notre Dame a month later. At the time, he told InsideCarolina.com that his recruitment was still fully open despite his commitment.
“I feel like [UNC] is home for me,” Brown said last month. “I value loyalty over everything, so I don’t see myself going anywhere. I’m locked in with UNC right now. But my recruitment is still 100% open.”
In addition to the Tar Heels, he held offers from Florida State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Penn State — among other — prior to his commitment. But now he’s back on the open market after UNC struggled to a 2-3 start and rumors swirled about Belichick’s future with the program.
The 5-foot-11, 200-pounder is the No. 271 overall prospect in the 2027 class, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, an equally weighted average that utilizes all three major recruiting services. He also ranks as the nation’s No. 20 running back and No. 10 recruit in North Carolina.
As a sophomore, Brown rushed for 612 yards and 11 touchdowns on 93 carries (6.6-yard average). He also finished fourth in receiving (15 catches for 269 yards and two scores). Through seven games as a junior, he has racked up 802 rushing yards on 102 carries (7.9 YPC) to go with 11 touchdowns. He has also hauled in six catches for 49 yards and another score.
