The Cleveland Browns have handed Dillon Gabriel the starting job, which led to them trading veteran Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals. This move means Shedeur Sanders will serve as the backup. However, if he had allowed the Baltimore Ravens to draft him, things might have turned out differently. Instead, he was heavily criticized for telling them not to draft him.
“I think this is insane. ... At this point you're in the fifth round. I understand you had higher hopes, but you've dropped to the fifth round and you're thinking about being a starting quarterback the next year. I think this is incredibly shortsighted. ... You want to go to a good organization where you can develop and reach your potential,” Alex Smith said on Sunday NFL Countdown.
Sanders hasn’t truly had the opportunity to be the Browns’ starter this year, but it seems the team is waiting until he’s fully ready.
“The expectation is that Sanders will play at some point this season when he's ready. When he does play, it would be with a full week of practice and a game plan built for him,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport wrote.
There’s no definitive timeline for when Sanders will get his shot. However, that may have become clearer during a segment on Cleveland’s 92.3 The Fan.
“Dillon Gabriel is gonna play for the foreseeable future as long as he's healthy. I don't think there's any intention to play Shedeur until a certain point. We will see Shedeur but I never thought it would be before December,” The Athletic’s Akron Jackson said on air.

The Browns appear committed to giving Gabriel a real chance to prove himself, but eventually, the organization’s patience could wear thin. For Gabriel, this might be a now-or-never opportunity.
Meanwhile, Sanders is waiting eagerly for his chance. Still, the Browns are likely to wait at least one more move before pulling the trigger.
