Lyon set to sign Rennes’ Hans Hateboer in ‘joker’ deal

L’Équipeunderstands that Olympique Lyonnais are set to sign Stade Rennais defender Hans Hateboer (31).

Whilst the transfer window is currently closed, clubs in France have the opportunity to make one ‘joker’ signing. It allows French clubs to sign one player outside of the window on the condition that they are either a free agent or play for another French club.

As per a report from L’Équipe, Lyon are going to benefit from this rule by securing the signing of Hateboer from Rennes. The former Atalanta centre-back is very much out of the picture at Roazhon Park and has played just 21 minutes of club football this season.

However, he is admired by OL manager Paulo Fonseca, who now looks set to bring in the Dutch centre-back on loan until the end of the season. Lyon will pay his salary in full.

Hateboer, whose contract at Rennes expires at the end of the season, will not be eligible to play against OGC Nice this weekend.
