Blessing in disguise – Why injury to Real Madrid defender creates opening for 22-year-old star to shine

Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen continues to recover from a muscle injury, and the uncertainty around his return is growing.

While there is optimism that he could make it back in time for El Clasico later this month, the club is treading carefully to avoid any risk of relapse

For now, the only certainty is that Huijsen will miss Real Madrid’s upcoming clash against Getafe.

Caution over Huijsen’s recovery

The medical team at Valdebebas is keeping a close eye on Huijsen’s progress.

Muscle injuries are notoriously tricky, and Real Madrid do not want to rush his recovery only to risk a setback before one of the most crucial fixtures of the season.

The defender, signed with high expectations in the summer, has been working individually in the gym and undergoing treatment to strengthen his calf.

However, simply being available for El Clasico isn’t enough, as he must be fully fit to compete at the highest level.

Adding to the concern is Antonio Rudiger’s absence, which leaves Xabi Alonso short of defensive options ahead of a busy period.

For what it is worth, this situation, though challenging, creates an unexpected opening for Raul Asencio.

Asencio’s chance to redeem himself

The 22-year-old defender endured a difficult start to the season after a series of costly mistakes during the Club World Cup.

His errors saw him lose prominence under Alonso, slipping down the pecking order. So far, Asencio has played just 354 minutes across two competitions, starting only three times.

Now, with Huijsen sidelined, Asencio has the perfect chance to redeem himself and prove he deserves a more consistent role.

Real Madrid’s technical staff still value his potential, and Alonso is known for rewarding players who respond positively to pressure.

While Huijsen’s injury is a setback for the team, it could be a turning point in Asencio’s season.

With strong performances, he can show that he belongs at the top level and help stabilise Madrid’s defence in the crucial weeks ahead.
