The Cincinnati Bengals scored a huge win Thursday night, with their new quarterback delivering a vintage performance to top Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, 33-31, at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati.
It was a game to remember for everyone who watched it, as two aging quarterbacks in Joe Flacco, making just his second appearance in a Bengals uniform, and Rodgers went toe-to-toe as though they found the fountain of youth.
But more than Flacco’s throwback performance, it was a major victory for the Bengals, who moved just a game under .500 with a 3-4 record through seven games. It was also their first win since Week 2, breaking a four-game skid that included Cincinnati’s 27-18 to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in Flacco’s Bengals debut in Week 6.
“We needed this. It’s been too long since we’ve won,” Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said after the game, per Ben Baby of ESPN.
The 40-year-old Flacco went 31-of-47 for 342 passing yards and three touchdowns with zero turnovers. He was sacked twice for a loss of 14 yards, but surely exceeded expectations with his showing on the field. The 1-2 downfield punch of the Bengals in wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins looked invigorated.
Chase torched the Steelers’ pass defense for 161 receiving yards and a touchdown on 16 receptions and 23 targets. Higgins, on the other hand, racked up 96 receiving yards and a score on six catches and 10 targets. Tight end Noah Fant caught the other Flacco touchdown while securing all four targets for 49 receiving yards.
Flacco led an eight-play drive near the end of regulation that ended on a go-ahead field goal for the Bengals. With still seconds left on the clock, Rodgers tried to pull off a Hail Mary, but his attempt was foiled in the end zone by Cincinnati, which will carry its momentum into Week 8 against the New York Jets at home.
