Monroe Region conference titles begin to be claimed with wins in Week 8 high school football

St. Mary Catholic Central was shorthanded, but still got its share.

The Falcons, missing seven starters because of an off-field incident, went on the road to hand Jefferson its first loss of the season 20-15 on Friday, Oct. 17, in Week 8 of the high school football season.

Both teams finished at 6-1 in the Huron League and share the league championship with Riverview, which thumped Grosse Ile 68-24.

“I am so proud of them,” SMCC coach Adam Kipf said of his players. “They are a resilient bunch. The guys who had to step up, stepped up.”

SMCC drove 95 yards to score on a run by Cole Reinhardt with 55.8 seconds left, then turned the Bears away on their final possession.

The Falcons scored first on a 40-yard pass from Brady Hines to Vince Harris, then Harris kicked the PAT. Jefferson grabbed an 8-7 advantage on a pass from Luke Beaudrie to Caleb Henry and Beaudrie’s 2-point conversion run.

SMCC went back on top on an 8-yard run by Hines with 3:19 left in the third quarter, but Jefferson quickly answered on a 23-yard pass from Beaudrie to Bret Gennoe.

Both teams are 7-1 overall.

Flat Rock 27, New Boston Huron 13

FLAT ROCK – Ben Scully scored three touchdowns, including two on passes of 19 and 67 yards from his brother Joel Scully, as Flat Rock improved to 5-3.

Joel Scully also ran 8 yards for a score and completed 14 of 15 passes for 216 yards.

Flat Rock led 15-6 at the half, then David Riddle got loose for an 85-yard TD run to create some space.

Huron’s scores came on a 30 yard pass from Cash Moczydlowsky and a 3-yard run by Owen DeLano.

Huron dipped to 3-5.

Carlson 59, Lincoln Park 36

LINCOLN PARK – Gibraltar Carlson bolted out to a 31-6 halftime lead then let backups handle most of the playing time in the second half in wrapping up a fifth consecutive Downriver League championship.

“Lincoln Park kept their starters on the field, but I was proud of how our second-string offense moved the ball and put points on the board,” Carlson coach Jason Gendron said. “There was a lot of good tonight and also some things we’ll work on moving forward.”

Purdue recruit Izaiah Wright made the most of limited time on the field with 201 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns. Jayden Allen led the defense with 5 tackles, a sack, and a blocked PAT.

Trent Ison threw a touchdown passes to Avery Ortiz (30 yards) and Marco DePaoli (14 yards) and ran 67 yards for a score.

Dundee 29, Blissfield 21 (OT)

DUNDEE — Angelo Graves scored on the first play of overtime, and the Dundee defense shut down four attempts on the other side to deliver a signature win.

Dundee charged out to a 21-0 lead in the first half but quickly saw its advantage slip away. Blissfield (1-7) scored back-to-back in the second quarter to cut the lead to 21-14 at halftime. The Royals then tied the game on the opening drive of the second half.Cam Fairchild scored a pair of touchdowns for Dundee in the first quarter. Wyatt Hickey also scored for the Vikings, who improved to 2-6.

Whiteford 58, Summerfield 6

PETERSBURG – Whiteford took advantage of three Summerfield turnovers and clinched no worse than a share of the Toledo Area Athletic Conference.

Mason DeBarr and Drew Ruddy returned interceptions for touchdowns. Tre Eitniear ran for two TDs and passed for one. Rocco Pillarelli had 126 yards on 8 rushes, including a 56-yard touchdown run, and Brek Ruddy had 109 yards on 6 rushes, including a 61-yard TD run in the third quarter.

Drew Ruddy added a 58-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

The Bobcats, who came into the game as the team with most points in 11-player football in Michigan, finished with 403 yards of total offense. The Bobcats (7-1) have scored at least 56 points in each of their victories. The Bobcats can win the TAAC outright with a home win over Ottawa Hills (Ohio) next Friday.

Summerfield was held to 39 yards rushing. Reece Kalb had 134 yards passing for the Bulldogs, including a 28-yard TD pass to Austin Miller in the first quarter.

Airport 33, Milan 27

CARLETON — Airport's Cash Nye pulled in a game-winning 9-yard TD catch with 1:44 remaining to put the Jets (1-7) in the win column for the first time this season.

Senior quarterback Dillon Byrd found Nye in the end zone on a gutsy third-down play to put Airport ahead, and Colton Alston picked off Milan with 14 seconds remaining to seal the win.

Byrd finished 9-for-15 passing for 140 yards and added 108 yards rushing. Pat Murphy had three short-yardage TDs, and Aidyn Stahr added a 23-yard TD catch in a wild second quarter that saw the teams combine for 28 points.

Jacob Offerman finished with 9 catches for 142 yards and two TDs to lead Milan. Quarterback Cam Dessellier also had a big game, finishing 12-for-23 passing for 182 yards and picking up 112 yards rushing and a score. Leland Varney also scored for the Big Reds, who fell to 1-7 overall.

Ann Arbor Huron 22, Monroe 12

ANN ARBOR – Monroe scored the first 12 points of the game, but Huron came storming back to drop the Trojans to 1-7.

“We started off really strong,” Monroe coach Kyle Reed said. “We executed well. It was 12-0. After that, we played well at times on defense, but couldn’t get the offense going.”

Keoni Snavely, who led the Trojans with 53 rushing yards, plunged in from the 1-yard line for the first points of the game. Brendan Bacon caught a 19-yard scoring pass from Dalen Cosby in the second quarter.

Tammer Collett, Nolan Cacioppo, and Julian Espinosa led the defense.

Clinton 28, Ida 16

IDA — Clinton stymied Ida's offense in the first half, holding the Blue Streaks to just a 26-yard field goal from Jaxon Bolster in a key Lenawee County Athletic Association battle.

The two sides played nearly even in the second half, but the Redwolves' 14-3 advantage in the first half proved to be the difference.

Ida's Gavin Albring scored on a pair of explosive plays after the intermission. He found the end zone on a 66-yard run in the third and added a 67-yard TD reception in the fourth.

Albring finished with 8 carries for 87 yards and two receptions for 70 yards to pace Ida, which fell to 6-2 overall. The loss dropped Ida to third in the LCAA behind Hudson and Clinton.

Saline 51, Bedford 0

SALINE — Saline proved its status as a state power with a dominant shutout.

The Mules were fighting for a chance to grab a share of the Southeastern Conference Red crown, but were stung by the Hornets, who were ranked No. 3 in Division 1 heading into the week.

Saline outgained Bedford 458-111.

Bedford dropped to 4-4 overall and closes out the regular season next week at home against Detroit Cass Tech.

Ottawa Hills 56, Erie Mason 8

EVERGREEN, Ohio – Erie Mason dipped to 0-8.
