Madison football takes shootout over Onsted, keeps MHSAA playoff hopes alive

After plenty of touchdowns, Madison football pulled away late to defeat Onsted and keep its playoff hopes alive.

ONSTED – All it took was a classic shootout to decide a win in Week 8, as the Madison Trojans faced off with the Onsted Wildcats in a conference clash.

When the smoke had cleared on an intense four quarters of football Madison took the win, defeating Onsted 53-35 in a back-and-forth affair on Friday, Oct. 17.

What Happened?

The best way to explian what happened is there was a lot of scoring, and we do mean a lot.

Onsted hit paydirt firstas Connor Kish rumbled in for a 4-yard touchdown. The extra point was good for a 7-0 lead with 5:50 left in the first quarter.

Onsted’s defense came up big with an interception on the next Madison possession, but the Trojan defense did the job, getting the ball right back. Just a few plays later, Madison found the end zone on a Dopp scramble and score, tying it at 7-7.

Madison took its first lead midway through the second quarter as Dopp found Derrell Tillman for a touchdown, giving the Trojans a 14-7 lead.

Onsted responded to tie the game again, on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Cole Wells to Cole Ruttofsky with 4:33 left in the half.

Madison, however, scored just before the half, sending the game to the break with the Trojans leading 21-14.

Madison took control early in the second half with a pair of touchdowns, led by Dopp's 68-yard touchdown run. Madison got the ball back and wasted little time as Gio Briggs battled his way into the end zone, giving Madison the 34-14 lead with 5:12 left in the third quarter.

Onsted answered back as Kish scored his second touchdown, this time from 25 yards out, closing the score to 34-21 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Again, Madison answered the call, finding the end zone thanks to Tillman, extending the lead to 41-21 with 9:44 left in the game.

Onsted made things very interesting over the next few minutes, beginning with Kish finding the endzone for the third time, this time from 13 yards out, closing the score to 41-28.

Onsted was able to recover the onside kick, giving the Wildcats possession. Onsted did not waste their opportunity as Colton Chamberlain hauled in a 7-yard touchdown catch from Wells, cutting the lead to 41-35 with 4:34 left in the game.

Madison dug deep and added a huge insurance score as Tillman scored on a 39-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 47-35 with 1:20 left in the game.

Onsted was not able to get their offense moving on the next drive, leading to a turnover on downs, which quickly led to Tillman again finding the end zone for a score, finding the final score of 53-35.

Madison keeps its MHSAA playoff hopes alive as it improves to 5-3 while Onsted falls to 3-5. Onsted will finish out at home next Friday vs. Ford while Madison will look to perhaps wrap up a postseason berth with a big trip to Tecumseh.
