What's a couple of inches of water at your feet when you're an athlete competing in a cross country meet?
A few inches of water, even as some of it splashed around them, couldn’t slow the roll of these local distance runners, making for a wet and wonderful Photo of the Week.
Despite the rain-soaked ground beneath their feet, runners kicked up their heels and into action in the recent Cape Coast Conference championship cross country meet in Wickham Park.
Roughly 150 yards from the start is a low section, right before the first turn, which tends to stay wet at this time of year, said FLORIDA TODAY photographer Craig Bailey.
“After all the rain we'd had the last week, this area was filled with 2 to 3 inches of water,” said Bailey.
“These athletes are cross country runners and a little water shouldn't be a problem, right? It wasn't. They charged right on through and kept going. And as expected, it made a pretty nice picture.”
And a postscript from the non-runner in the crowd: Waterproof hiking boots “came in very handy that morning,” said Bailey.
