Man City Climb to Second after Haaland Brace Against Everton
Relentless Haaland Extends Scoring Run
Man City continue to rely on their Norwegian powerhouse and once again he delivered. Erling Haaland scored twice to secure victory over Everton at Etihad Stadium, lifting Pep Guardiola’s side up to second place in the Premier League. Fresh from scoring a hat trick for Norway during the international break, he showed no signs of slowing down. His tally now stands at 23 goals in only 13 games for club and country this season, a number that already defies logic.
The first half offered little from Haaland, yet his impact after the restart was immediate. His first real opening came from Nico O’Reilly’s cross, which he met with a thunderous header. Minutes later he struck again, this time sweeping home Savinho’s cutback. The effort took a slight deflection off Everton defender James Tarkowski, although it did little to take the shine off his clinical finishing.
Missed Chances Ruin Everton Momentum
Everton arrived buoyed by a dramatic late win over Crystal Palace, and their level of confidence showed early on. David Moyes set his team up with intent and for long spells they were the more dangerous side. Iliman Ndiaye caused regular problems for the Man City backline, using his pace and sharp movement to unsettle defenders.
The Senegal international intercepted a loose pass from Nathan Ake, driving into the box before squaring low across goal. Beto could not get there in time to turn it in. That was followed by another burst from Ndiaye, weaving past challenges before unleashing a fierce strike that Gianluigi Donnarumma had to tip over. Those moments summed up Everton’s frustration. Plenty of promise, no reward.
City Regain Control Through Superior Quality
Even before Haaland’s brace, Man City had started to threaten. Savinho scuffed straight at Jordan Pickford from close range, then forced another smart stop from the England goalkeeper. Everton had a scare when Jake O’Brien looped a header onto his own crossbar, a reminder of the fine margins in fixtures involving top-level opposition.
Once Haaland struck, Everton’s energy faded. Their early aggression and well-structured pressing gave way to damage limitation. Man City maintained control without exerting themselves, using possession to drain any hope of a late comeback.
Man City Look Ready to Challenge Again
This was not the most fluent performance from Man City, yet they still found a way through thanks to their number nine. Haaland’s ability to remain quiet for long periods before exploding into life continues to be the defining trait of this team. Everton will be encouraged by large parts of their display but they lacked the composure to turn chances into goals. Against Man City, that is rarely forgiven.
