Colorado football midseason surprises: Some good, some bad seven weeks in

Colorado football has found key contributors in a few individuals that perhaps were not counted to produce as much as they have through seven games.

The Colorado Buffaloes have to sit back and watch the Week 8 college football slate as they have their first bye week of the season.

It's the perfect time in the season to dive into some midseason roundtable questions about the 2025 Buffs.

Deion Sanders' squad is 3-4 overall with a 1-3 Big 12 record and is coming off its best performance of the season, an upset win over a ranked Iowa State team. It has been far from perfect, but Colorado is seemingly putting it together with five games left to play.

We picked our midseason most valuable players in our first roundtable discussion, so naturally, let's move on to our most surprising players.

Here are our surprise player selections after seven games.

Griffin's most surprising player: QB Kaidon Salter

Salter has been up and down so far for the Buffs, looking great in some games (Iowa State) and struggling big time in others (TCU). What version of Salter will we get over the final five games?

Jack's most surprising player: S Tawfiq Byard

Colorado entered the season with a hole at safety, and Byard has stepped up to become the every-down level player that they needed. The secondary's tackling has improved significantly with him in, bringing much-needed stability to an injured group. He looks like a natural fit at the position and is only a sophomore; there will be big things ahead for Byard.

Charlie's most surprising player: WR Joseph Williams

Joseph Williams has arguably been the Buffs' best skill position player and is second on the team with 370 receiving yards, but leads the team with 24 receptions. Against Iowa State, he eclipsed 100 yards for the first time this year and hauled in his third touchdown. Williams has evident chemistry with quarterback Kaidon Salter, who is becoming the team's clear top option from the slot position.
