Saturday was a big day for SMCC athletes as girls golf placed ninth at state and Christian Craanen and Bella LaFountain ran to cross country wins.
BIG RAPIDS – The St. Mary Catholic Central girls golf team placed ninth in the state.
The Kestrels posted a first-round score of 418 Friday and followed that up with a 408 on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Katke Golf Course for a two-day total of 828 in the Division 4 state finals.
Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian won the championship with a 745.
“We played better today,” SMCC coach Jeff Kansier said. “Yesterday was tough. I am very proud of these girls for an historic season.”
Nora Kinsey of SMCC made the All-State team by shooting 96-86—182. That was the 10th best individual score of the tournament.
She was supported by Lauren Tolliver with 190, Madelyn Gessner with 222 and Graclyn Carter with 232.
Jennah Cadle of Monroe shot 108 Saturday after carding a 121 Friday for a 229 total in the Division 1 meet at Grand Valley State University.
Madilyn Peterson of Gibraltar Carlson had a strong round of 89 Saturday at Bedford Valley in Battle Creek in the Division 5 finals. That gave her a two-day total of 194.
Flat Rock’s Elyse Rogier shot 99-108—207 in the Division 3 finals at Forest Akers West in East Lansing to finish 11th among golfers who qualified individually.
SATURDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS
CROSS COUNTRY
Christian Craanen and Bella LaFountain, St. Mary Catholic Central: Won championships at the Airport Haunted Forest Invitational: Craanen was the boys champion with a time of 16:31.4 and LaFountain was the girls champ in 20:15. Phineas Totten of SMCC took 14th in the boys race with Colton Childress of the Monroe Milers 17th and Airport’s Hunter Rodak 19th. Summerfield’s Allison Ost placed 12th in the girls race.
Grant Rasor, Whiteford: Placed 34th to lead the Bobcats in the Whitmore Lake Larry Steeb Invitational. Braelynn Chiotti and Briar Wing were 42nd and 43rd, respectively for Whiteford’s girls.
Luke Stanley, Ida: Took 11th place in the boys race at the Lenawee County Athletic Association finals at Hudson. Mason Edelbrock was 16th for Dundee. Brynn Luskey finished 15th in the girls race, directly ahead of the Dundee duo of Lydia Richards and Addison Ringbloom.
VOLLEYBALL
Addie Homrich, Erie Mason: Earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team for the Allen Park Tournament after totaling 17 kills and 25 digs in four matches. The Eagles split with Monroe, Allen Park Inter-City Baptist and Dearborn Fordson, then fell to Fordson in the first round of the playoffs. Jayanna Willets also logged 25 digs and Kensey Kreger racked up 10 blocks.
Kailee LaVoy, Whiteford: Blasted 40 kills and hit .305 as the Bobcats (19-12) went 3-3 in the Belleville Tournament. Other standouts were Bailey Spradling (30 kills, 48 digs), Addeson Cousino (36 digs, 95 assists, 12 aces) and Jenna Frye (29 kills).
