Before the season even started, there was talk that Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was starting to lose the locker room. Others speculated that he had already lost it.
Seven games into the Dolphins’ season, McDaniel’s seat couldn’t be hotter, especially after losing 31-6 to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. While previous reports suggested the Dolphins wouldn’t make an in-season coaching change in relation to McDaniel, that may no longer be the case after Sunday’s embarrassment.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Sunday’s loss to the Browns could change Dolphins owner Stephen Ross’ mind. In other words, the Dolphins may be considering McDaniel much more seriously than they had been prior to Miami falling to 1-6.
“I’m told that the plan from owner Stephen Ross was to give both Mike McDaniel and the general Chris Grier all of the season to see where things went,” Florio said. “Now they’re 1-6, they lose to the previously 1-5 Cleveland Browns in blowout fashion. Now I’m told that timeline could change and it could change quickly.”
Changing quickly could mean firing McDaniel before the Dolphins make it to their Week 8 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. Or perhaps this is just the latest smokescreen that will blow over in a few days. Still, after a blowout loss, Dolphins ownership can’t be happy, and it’s possible McDaniel is the one who pays the price by losing his job.
