The defense was better.

The Dallas Cowboys moved themselves into second in the NFC East with a 44-22 win over the Washington Commanders at AT&T Stadium.
With the offense again prolific, which, most always expect with Dak Prescott, the defense facing Jayden Daniels looked...improved.
A total of four sacks on Jayden (one of which was a strip sack by Shemar James that injured Daniels), along with some increased pressure in the second half, the Cowboys' defense put on a better showing than it has in previous weeks.
But what did head coach Brian Schottenheimer think of Matt Eberflus' defense?
“They played really hard like they always do,” Schottenheimer said. “I thought we affected the quarterback the way that we had in New York. I think that's huge. It wasn't just the four sacks, it was the hits. I thought our run defense really was great, [Marcus] Mariota got us for a couple runs, but they were swarming the ball. We were sticky in coverage, and that was all great to see.”

Cowboys' run defense also stiffens vs. Commanders
The Commanders came into the game as one of the best teams running the football, averaging 151 yards per game, and while Washington rushed for 136 yards, they were all hard-earned yards because the Cowboys held all of the Commanders' runners under 40 yards.
So, there's that.
Given the state of the division, this was a game Dallas had to have, and being at home, it made it even more critical, so the Cowboys will be feeling good about where they sit in the NFC East.
And they also might now have some much-needed confidence in their defense after this showing, and while it is only one game, the arrow, which was pointing straight at the ground, might now, ever so slightly, be pointing upward.
