Throughout several moments of Sunday’s game, it appeared that Brian Burns’ New York Giants were well on track to arguably their best win of the season. But that was before the Denver Broncos rallied to score 33 points in the fourth quarter, showing what made them a playoff team in 2024.
The Giants ultimately didn’t win, instead losing a 33-32 heartbreaker, falling to 2-5 in the process. The loss stirred up a lot of emotions, especially inside the Giants’ locker room.
But no one was more vocal than Giants’ Pro Bowl pass-rusher Brian Burns, who could be heard criticizing defensive coordinator Shane Bowen’s decision to “drop eight” into coverage on the final drive of the game. This allowed Broncos quarterback Bo Nix to have plenty of time to survey the field and find open receivers.
#Giants pass-rusher Brian Burns was pissed walking back to the locker room — and you could hear him voicing his anger over the team “dropping eight in coverage” on the final possession.

Mike Garafolo from NFL Network managed to pick apart a specific play that Burns is likely alluding to, showing the Giants getting absolutely no pressure on Nix at a crucial moment of the game.
This is the play in question. Not only did Bo Nix have time to operate, he had space. Nobody near him. Both edge rushers chipped. Hence Burns’ frustration. pic.twitter.com/No33HXcH9S

After seeing that play broken down, it’s hard not to agree with Burns, though hindsight is always 20/20, especially after a loss. The Giants have no choice but to move on, hoping to learn from another tough loss, but it’s hard not to wonder what could have happened, had coach Bowen dialed up some pressure instead of taking the coverage approach with the game on the line. Burns clearly feels like the defense should have tried something different.
