Trailing 21-10 to Penn State in the third quarter, Iowa had its back against the wall Saturday night. Behind a historic night by quarterback Mark Gronowski on the ground, the Hawkeyes were fueled to a 25-24 victory.
“The offensive line, again, they did a great job up front making those holes and getting guys blocked and making it easy for me,” Gronowski said. “Then that kind of set us up for that last touchdown to take the lead. The offense ended up setting up a pretty big hole there. I had to break one tackle and once I picked my eyes up and there was nobody there I got pretty bug-eyed there and took a peak at the screen up there. Knew I just had to run hard and try to get as many yards as possible. There was a bunch of green grass.”
“He said he would have scored if his knee was 100 percent, but he’s not quite there yet, but it just says a lot about him,” said Kirk Ferentz, Iowa football’s head coach. “First of all, he is a really good football player and an unbelievable human being. Then, to come off of that injury, he’s not quite 100 percent, but he’s looking better every day. What he did out there tonight, I’m sure he’s not thinking about it. He’s thinking about helping the team.”
“It feels good to get a win like this,” said Kamari Moulton, an Iowa running back. “When your back against the wall and you know you are able to find a way to pull through, it’s just a real momentum shifter and a real boost of confidence. Just having the crowd there made it 10 times better. We know our (quarterback) is going to make a play if he needs to make a play. So just seeing that and being around for him helped us.”
“Going against Penn State, growing up, like, that is one of the premier powerhouses and it’s one of those games you dream of playing in Kinnick,” Gronowski said. “The striped out stadium, fully sold out. Again, a night game in Kinnick. Like, this is what you dream as a kid, and it was so much fun playing out there.”
