The Calvary Baptist Academy football team could win the school’s second state title in three years with a win on Thursday.
Dreams, whether we’re sleeping or while we’re awake, we all have them. A dream coming true is what’s on the line for the Cavaliers Thursday night as they play for a state title. “A lot of guys coach a long time and a lot of kids play a long time and never get to do that,” head coach Rodney Guin says. “Some of these kids have been there twice in three years. So, you know, it’s a it’s a neat experience. Something the kids here work very hard for.”
It’s a moment all high school athletes dream about, and their starting quarterback, Hudson Price, is no different, “It’s gonna be a dream come true. I’m gonna get some chills or something.” Price continued, “I mean, thinking about, me, like in sixth grade, dreaming about that. I mean, it’s just going to be unreal honestly.”
Luke Miller, free safety of the Cavs was on this team two years ago when they won it all, but he wasn’t a starter. Now in his senior year, he’s ready for the bright lights of a championship game. “It’s just so surreal and just, you know, that’s what every high school football player just dreams of, is to be in just an atmosphere like that and just situation like that,” the senior said.
It’s hard to say a team that just won it all in 2023 was an underdog entering the season, and they weren’t, but at the beginning of the year, and after a week two loss to Neville, thoughts of a state title weren’t on the forefront of Guin’s mind.
“We didn’t know what we were going to have, and they got better every single week, and you know, now they’re going to go down as one of the best teams at Calvary,” Guin said of his team this year.
The week after their loss to Neville, they faced a tough Franklin Parish team. The Cavs won 33-30. It was that win that made their head coach believe this team was different. The win also provided confidence to a unique group that had and has a chip on their shoulder. Their quarterback said, “everybody doubts us, and we have, like, that drive to go out there and prove everybody wrong.”
Standing in Calvary’s way of its second championship in three years is Dunham and the school’s highly touted quarterback, Elijah Haven. Haven is widely considered the number one QB recruit in the class of 2027. Coach Guin believes he’ll need big plays from his defense, especially his star safety. Guin says, “We’ll need Luke Miller to play well on defense. He’s our leader back there.”
Miller, smiled when he was told his coach named him personally as a player to step up. The senior said in response, “it’s a little it’s a little nerve wracking. Just a lot of pressure on me. But, you know, I feel like my guys behind me got my back so I’m gonna be able to make some plays, even make some mistakes, and my guys will be able to pick me up.”
Guin also mentioned his quarterback and standout wide receiver, Braylun Huglon, as two other players he’d like to see have good games.
Just days away from playing for a state title, Cav’s head coach just wants his team to enjoy the entire trip, “I told them yesterday, I want to have fun. I want them to have fun. They’ve earned the right to go. I want them to enjoy the trip, and then when the game starts, you know, we go to work.” He finished saying, “[going to state] is just, you know, a memory they’ll have forever. High school football, getting to go to the Superdome.”
Calvary kicks off against Dunham at 7 P.M. Thursday, December 11, 2025.
