Arsenal injury update ahead of Club Brugge Champions League clash

Arsenal travel to Belgium this week carrying a growing physical toll that has begun to shape their European campaign. The latest Arsenal injury update confirms a significant triple setback, with three senior players ruled out of Wednesday night’s Champions League tie against Club Brugge.

Declan Rice, Leandro Trossard and William Saliba were all absent from training on Tuesday afternoon and have not made the trip. Rice’s omission has been attributed to illness, while Trossard continues to manage the calf problem that first surfaced two weeks ago against Bayern Munich. Despite coming off the bench at Villa Park on Saturday and finding the net, the forward was unable to complete the match, underlining the severity of the issue.

Key absentees impact plans

Saliba’s absence is arguably the most disruptive. The defender has not featured since suffering a knock in training on November 29 and remains unavailable, despite previous optimism over a potential return. His continued unavailability adds further strain to a back line that has already been stretched throughout the campaign.

Arteta provided clarity on the situation on Tuesday evening, explaining the decisions behind the travelling squad.

“Declan was ill. He was quite sick after the game [against Aston Villa] already and he hasn’t travelled with us,” said Arteta on Tuesday night.

“He wasn’t feeling good at all. So he will have a couple of days to rest and to get his body right, but today he was already very keen to be able to play, but unfortunately he is not able to do that.

“William is still not available and Leo, again, picked up another knock in an area where he had the previous issue.

“I don’t expect that it is going to be long, but unfortunately he cannot be with us [in Brugge].”

Wider Arsenal injury update

This trio adds to a broader injury list that continues to test Arsenal’s depth. Cristhian Mosquera, Gabriel and Kai Havertz are all set to miss the encounter with Club Brugge, while teenage midfielder Max Dowman faces a spell on the sidelines after injuring his ankle last weekend.

The recurring theme has become squad management and the impact of sustained absences on workload across the group. Arsenal were plagued by fitness issues last season, and questions have resurfaced over whether training methods contribute to the problem. Arteta has firmly rejected the notion.

“We don’t train,” he said. “Today we have done 20 minutes, so surely it is not because we overtrain the players?

“We don’t have time to train, but the fact that you are missing players, you are loading other players more.

“That is a consequence to that and it is really a dangerous circle that one. It is a test for the team and, so far, we have reacted very well to that.”

Pressure mounts before Brugge

This latest Arsenal injury update places added emphasis on squad resilience ahead of a demanding European night. With several key contributors absent, rotation options narrow and tactical flexibility becomes constrained. How Arsenal navigate this latest challenge may say much about their ability to sustain momentum across competitions as winter pressures intensify.
