PGA Tour player reveals what he learned from Nelly Korda at team golf

Nelly Korda and Denny McCarthy are one of 12 new teams at this week's Grant Thornton Invitational but it's not the first time they've bee paired.

Nelly Korda and Denny McCarthy are one of 12 new teams (out of 16) at this week's Grant Thornton Invitational. But, interestingly, it's not the first time the pair have partnered together at Tiburon Golf Club.

Three years ago at the QBE Shootout, Korda joined Lexi Thompson as the only women to participate in the typically all-male event. Korda and McCarthy tied for fifth that week. The Grant Thornton replaced the QBE in 2023.

McCarthy, 32, said he picked up some tips from Korda back then.

Denny McCarthy and Nelly Korda of the United States line up a putt on the eighteenth green during round one of the QBE Shootout at Tiburon Golf Club on December 09, 2022 in Naples, Florida.

"This place has some nasty into-the-grain shots and her short game really showed off that week," said McCarthy. "I feel like I kind of stole a couple of her little techniques that she uses on her short game that I can kind of use to this day. So thank you."

Korda, 27, said it was McCarthy's putting that made a big impression on her.

"We're going to have a putting competition right after this," Korda said during Wednesday's press conference.

Korda, winless so far in 2025, teamed up with Daniel Berger in 2024 and took a share of 13th. In 2023, she played with Tony Finau and tied for fourth.

"The best way to grow the game is for us to come together and lift each other up, support each other," said Korda of co-sanctioning with the PGA Tour for the unofficial mixed team event.

"That's what this tournament does."
